flock to the show
flock to the show artist 2023
Michelle was honoured to be selected as an artist for the upcoming ‘Flock to the Show’ artwork trail. She painted her design onto the assigned fibreglass sheep in January at the Royal Highland Centre, Ingliston. The flock of 40 sheep with their unique designs travelled around Scotland, giving multiple opportunities to be seen by the public, before they came together at The Royal Highland Show in June to celebrate the return of the Golden Shears, World Shearing Championships to Scotland.
Michelle is delighted to reveal…
‘The Woolly Back’
‘The Woolly Back’ design is inspired by the many uses of wool, from tweeds and tartans to knitted garments and woven blankets. Wool from the sheep was once highly valued and would pay the rent on the farm, however in more recent times the price for the wool doesn’t even cover the cost of shearing and so is done purely for the welfare of the sheep. Wool crafts and the products created are a part of rural life in Scotland and although now underused due to modern textiles, wool has so many incredible properties and our history with it should be celebrated.
‘There is a lot of detail in the design and I definitely questioned my design idea during the painting process, particularly when I was painting each stitch of knitting by hand! I am really pleased with how well it has turned out though and I hope it is enjoyed by lots of people but also helps people to appreciate what the humble wool off a sheep’s back can be turned into.’
